MAKING

Meal prepping for the week ahead can be a family activity—consider adding these fun kid-inclusive ideas to your repertoire. First, set aside a few hours one day a week to gather the little ones for help with no-cook prep work—think: pulling meat and cheese ingredients from the fridge for a recipe like Boar’s Head Maple Honey Ham and Cheese Pinwheels, tearing herbs, peeling hard-boiled eggs, and pouring items from opened cans and packages into storage containers. Turn on some of their favorite music to dance to, serve up yummy drinks, and these will become memory-making moments.

And when it comes to cooking, make them your sous chefs—ask them to help you measure or portion out ingredients, such as the peanut butter, Boar’s Head Dark Chocolate Dessert Hummus, and almond flour for these Boar’s Head No-Bake Dark Chocolate Hummus Bites—and you will teach them about quantities and get them excited about eating what they had a hand in creating. Buy some blank cloth aprons that they can customize using puff paints and fabric pens. They’ll tie it on every time they sidle up to you in the kitchen, and it’ll give them a sense of purpose and ownership in their role.

“First, I have the kids get involved by taking out the ingredients needed from the refrigerator. Then, when making tortilla pinwheels for example, I have the kids add Boar’s Head MapleGlazed Honey Coat® Ham, spinach, and Boar’s Head Yellow American Cheese to a flour tortilla. I wrap it up tightly and cut slices to create pinwheels. The kids help me add bamboo picks to them along with cherry tomatoes.”
